Chapter Ten
âPull the trigger.â Russ held Addieâs elbow, relieved heâd gotten her away from the social club for a few hours, at least as far as she would ride on Diablo. She didnât seem to care much for horses but then she cared little for the derringer heâd purchased for her as well. But after the night sheâd blown a hole in the roof of the social club trying to use a rifle, it was time she learned how to shoot.
Heâd enjoyed the ride with her arms tight around his middle.
âHow loudâs it gonna be?â She fidgeted to free herself from his grip. âI told you I have better things to do than learn about this gun. I donât much like guns, Russ.â
âAim ahead at the post there. Itâs a small fire. Wonât have much kick but the day comes you need it in the social club, and youâll know what to do.â He gripped her elbow again. âGo on.â
She gave a hummpph, closed her eyes and squeezed the first trigger. She let out a yelp and jumped as the blast came, then she fired again by accident, the double trigger throwing her.
Russ chuckled and took control of the small weapon. âYou arenât supposed to close your eyes. And donât jump like that. Hold still when you fire the thing.â He handed the derringer back to her.
She turned the gun toward her to look at it. âItâs still smoking.â
He pushed her wrist back down. âRule number one: never point the barrel at anyoneâincluding yourself.â
âI told you I didnât want or need a gun. I ainât gonna kill anyone.â She fussed, then gave a huff and pointed toward the post fifty paces away. âReady.â
He nodded and let go of her arm with a nod.
This time she fired, but the bullet strayed, digging up dirt on the far side of the post. She still jumped and blinked but that was better.
She shaded her eyes with a hand and squinted to see in the distance. âDid I hit it?â
âNo.â He took the gun and loaded it again and put it back into her hand. âThe thing is if you barely aim, you miss by little. Focus on it.â
âWell, if I ever need it, I wonât be shooting so far from who I gotta hit.â She winked and held steady, her breasts rising as she pulled in a deep breath.
Well, at least the view was a nice one as he taught her. Russ waited, and the shot rang out though she missed again. âItâll take some practice like now. Once more.â
She shook her head but took aim and fired. Nothing. âSee I think this gun is off. Maybe it canât shoot that far.â She pushed the gun back toward him.
Russ took the derringer again. Typical of Addie to challenge him rather than admit defeat. âYou think so, do you?â
âI took good aim. So yes, thatâs what I think.â She folded her arms with that enticing pout. The one he loved to kiss and taste. It was almost enough to distract him from his mission of teaching her how to defend herself.
